Welcome

Thank you for visiting OHF’s website. We hope that you will
find all the information you need to help us fight back
against CHD, such as sponsorship opportunities, planning a
fund raiser, donating, or attending an event.  OHF’s mission
is to fight back against the number 1 birth defect, congenital
heart defects (CHD), by funding vital and promising
research, increasing public awareness and education, and
    supporting those affected by CHD.

            Peter and I founded Olivia’s
Heart Fund shortly after the death of
our 13 day old daughter, Olivia Marie
    Ostiguy. Although we had suffered
the most tragic loss, we knew we
could not turn our backs on the
world of congenital heart defects.  It
is our goal to give other parents
hope, so that Olivia’s battle and
death will never be in vain.  If Olivia
had been born 20 years ago, we
would have been given no other
choice than to take her home to die.
    Surgical advancements have allowed
90% of children born with some form
of CHD to survive into adulthood.

However, babies like Olivia, who are born with more
complex heart defects, are still dying.  For instance, 25% of
babies born with HLHS, the same heart defect as Olivia, will
not live past the age of 5.  congenital heart defects are the
number one cause of stillborn and infant death.  Of the
40,000 infants born a year with CHD in the Unites States,
thousands will not live to see their first birthday.  There are
at least 35 known heart defects to date, but there is no
known cause or cure for any of them.

Olivia’s Heart Fund aspires to be a premier organization
funding vital and promising research focused on
advancements in technology and cardiac-thoracic surgery to
decrease the mortality rate of infants and children with CHD
and research focused on finding the causes in order to
reduce occurrence of babies born with CHD.  We need your
help to give hope to these children and their parents.  We
hope you consider joining our fight so that no child’s battle
    is ever in vain.

         Sincerely,
         Julie and Peter Ostiguy

SIBLING TREASURE CHEST

The Sibling Treasure Chest  was established at Children’s Hospital
Boston, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) in January, 2009.  The
Sibling Treasure Chest was hand built  and has been filled with
thousands of toys  over the past year by generous donors. The
program is ongoing and supported by donations of new toys to supply
the Sibling Treasure Chest.  Toys are delivered on an as-needed basis
by Olivia’s Heart Fund board members or volunteers. The Sibling
Treasure Chest is for siblings of patients admitted in the CICU to help
foster a sense of belonging and inclusion during a family’s time in the
CICU. The Sibling Treasure Chest is also designed to help parents, who
often feel torn between their children who are away from them and the
child who is admitted in the CICU.  It helps brothers / sisters feel secure
and loved during their sibling’s hospital stay.  Toy drives for the Sibling
Treasure Chest help to bring awareness to the community regarding
CHD.  The toy drives have occurred at local businesses in RI and by
various individual supporters of OHF.
If you would like to contribute some special treasures for  the Sibling
Treasure Chest, here are some items that are needed (ages 6 months -
12 yrs): crayons and coloring books
